Spicy Bitter Gourd Curry Recipe


Ingredients :

Bitter gourd (Pavakkai/ Kakarakaya) – 1 cup (chopped)

Onion’s – 1 cup

Tomato’s – 1/2 cup

Ginger and Garlic – finely chopped

Tamarind

Cumin seeds

Curry leaves (Kariveppilai)

Coriander leaves (Kothamalli ilai)

Green chili’s (Pachai Milagai) – 2

Red chili powder

Turmeric Powder

Garam masala powder

Jaggery (Vellam)

Oil

 

Method :

1. Soak the bitter gourd pieces in water by adding salt for 30 – 40 minutes before preparing the dish

Also prepare Tamarind juice (Puli Karaisal) by adding tamarind and jaggery to water

2. Put oil in a pan and heat it, add cumin seeds and allow it to splutter

3. Add onion’s, tomato’s, green chili’s, curry leaves, ginger, garlic, turmeric powder, mix and fry well

4. Now add the bitter gourd pieces soaked previously along with the above fried items, fry well

5. Add red chili powder, garam masala, little pinch of salt, tamarind jaggery juice previously prepared, and mix well

6. Add sufficient amount of water, close the lid for the curry to boil, add coriander leaves to garnish, and the recipe is ready

 

Bitter gourd in tamil is called as Pavakkai and in telugu is called as Kakarakaya

Curry leaves in tamil is called as Kariveppilai

Coriander leaves in tamil is called as Kothamalli ilai

Green chilli’s in tamil is called as Pachai Milagai

Jaggery in tamil is called as Vellam

Tamarind juice  in tamil is called as Puli Karaisal
