Kathirikai (Brinjal) Gothsu Recipe

Ingredients : 

  1. Brinjal / Kathirikai – 4 or 5 chopped and pressure cooked
  2. Small Onion / Chinna Vengayam – 5 or 6 chopped
  3. Tamarind Paste / Puli Karaisal
  4. Turmeric Powder – 1 Ts
  5. Salt
  6. Oil / Yennai

For Making Gothsu Masala Powder
(Dry Roast and Make Masala Powder) :
1. Dried Red Chili / Kaaintha Milagai – 4
2. Coriander Seeds / Dhania – 1 Ts
3. Cumin Seeds / Seerakam
4. Fenugreek Seeds / Venthayam
5. Asafetida / Perungayathool

For Tempering :
1. Curry Leaves / Karuveppilai – few
2. Mustard / Kaduku
3. Urad Dal / Ulundu
4. Pepper Cons / Milagu


Method :

  1. Pressure cook the brinjal pieces and mash them, set it aside
  2. Prepare the gosthu masala powder, by heating a pan and dry roasting the ingredients mentioned under dry roast and grind
  3. After the ingredients cool off, add them to mixer grinder and make the masala powder
  4. Now take a pan add oil and heat it, add small onion’s, mix and saute them
  5. Then add tamarind paste and turmeric powder, mix well, let it cook, add the mashed brinjal, mix well
  6. Add the grinded masala powder (add according to the spiciness you require), mix well, also add salt, mix and let it cook for few more minutes, once the gosthu is ready, switch off the flame, Now start preparing the tempering by adding oil to a small pan, heat it, add ingredients mentioned under (for tempering), add it to the gosthu, mix well, the recipe is ready
